Amazing Success for LGBTQ Youth on Feb. 22nd!
Dear Allyship Community!
Thank you for an amazing LGBTQ Youth Advocacy Day! Allyship/ERW advocates shared their stories as LGBTQ individuals experiencing foster care and homelessness or being low-income or a dreamer to educate their legislators on the unique issues LGBTQ youth face. It was striking how often legislators from Mont Lake Terrace, Bellevue to Tacoma were not aware that 40% of homeless youth in Washington State are part of the LGBTQ community. As Allyship’s first Youth Advocacy Day we are reminded of the need for the LGBTQ community to educate lawmakers and othercommunity leaders on the unique challenges LGBTQ and youth of color face around access to education and homelessness.
Allyship is proud to announce that the Becca bill, a bill that would ensure runaway youth who contact homeless youth services have 72 hours before authorities are contacted, passed the House and Senate and the Governor is signing the bill into law today!
Lastly, Allyship would like to thank Mockingbird Society and the hundreds of youth that came out to advocate for a better future in Washington State!
